Can Physiotherapy Be Used To Prevent Knee Injuries

In 2011 I spent in excess of 9 months with a training related injury which caused sharp knee pain each time I attempted to work out. This knee pain got worse with time and my capacity to exercise was limited to upper body workout routines, generally swimming, push ups, chin ups and various kettlebell workout routines. I was certainly struggling to squat, lunge and run without having experiencing the same knee pain the next day.

Just before my injury, I spent two years training in a CrossFit box. During that time I generally kept free of injuries, right up until the knee begun to play up. Since my injury occurred, CrossFit training has been out of question.

I avoided going to the physiotherapist worrying the news that I might require arthroscopy to correct my knee pain. I was concerned about cartilage damage because my knee was generating a quite audible grinding noise. After a discussion with the personal trainer, VeronikaPT, I made the decision to visit a well-known Sydney physiotherapy, Balance in Motion that specializes in lower limb physiotherapy as well as running injuries.

Nick, the physiotherapist established quite quickly that my knee worries were not really linked to any cartilage damage but to a substantial firmness inside my outer quad muscle. The external quad muscle had been very tight and the inner quad muscle had not been very active – because of this my knee cap had been drawn upward. The grinding sound was the knee cap rubbing against some fat matter which separates knee cap from the bone. Since that fat matter included quite a few nerve endings, and my knee cap had been grinding against it, I had been going through this particular knee pain.

Sound straightforward? Well, not really because I found out from Nick that the real cause of my quad tightness had been imbalance in my rib cage (?) and was related to my shoulder joint dislocation some 12 years ago. I had been surprised that my sports physio might reveal all this from just a thirty minute visit, a couple of squats, some balancing on each leg and some pressing and quad muscle examination.

The most important discovery for me was that all my injuries over the last ten years or so were on the same side of my body and were linked to this rib cage imbalance. Basically, my whole body had been compensating for this very minor muscular tightness around my shoulder joint and ribs.

The solution was simple and easy – some remedial massage therapy, acupuncture and light exercises to mend my posture and loosen up my muscle tissue.

My key points in this instance are these:

• I had not made a visit to a physiotherapy clinic to prevent injuries.

• Once I did so, it took less than half an hour to determine the reason behind my knee pain and the root causes.

• It took less than 30 days to completely take away the problem, including my rib cage concerns.

• I have lost nearly a year without being capable of exercise correctly, sometimes encountering a significant knee pain.

To answer my opening question – physiotherapy should be seen as a preventative as well as a remedial measure for any person carrying out any fitness or sporting activity. Correcting the posture or muscular inadequacies and injuries should be viewed as a priority regardless of the degree of physical fitness you might have.

Consequently, along with the coaching from your personal trainer, regular remedial massage and physio should form the basis of durability in fitness and workout.
